“You must understand the whole of life, not just one little part of it. That is why you must read, that is why you must look at the skies, that is why you must sing and dance, and write poems, [and paint,] and suffer, and understand, for all that is life.”
J. Krishnamurti
| For many people, fabric is an emotive visual tool, evoking memories of places we went and the events of our lives, through associations based on colour, pattern and style. It is sensual, both to look at and to touch. Certain fabrics, for example silk and satin speak to us of wealth and culture. Others like cotton, remind us of simpler pleasures, like sitting at the kitchen table in the house we grew up in.Through the use of fabric as a metaphor for life, I have sought to explore themes common to all of humanity: our emotions, our losses, our innocence, our passion, our loves but also our need at times to surrender to the flow of life. There is a connection for me between the sensuality of the cloth and the soulfulness of life. Life is beautiful even in the dark times. |
